The University of Indianapolis is a liberal arts school located, quite obviously, in Indianapolis, IN. A growing institution, UIndy is on the top of plenty of ranking lists, and is renowned for its many medical programs, including programs in nursing, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. It’s the alma mater of Ryan, our founder, and has been supportive of Metonymy Media since our founding. We’ve partnered with the English department for internship programs and we’ve hosted readings and workshops for the school’s student press at our Fountain Square office. We’re honored, in addition to these connections we’ve kept with our local institution of higher learning, to also list UIndy as a client.

In truth, it would be more appropriate to list UIndy as three different clients. While it might have been one department that issued the checks to pay us for our work, we’ve had the chance to work with three different departments on three completely unrelated projects:

Admissions

In our first ongoing project for UIndy, we partnered with the Admissions department to help them bridge some content gaps for Inside UIndy, their quarterly magazine aimed at prospective students. We had a great time interviewing students, faculty, staff, and alumni to write cover stories for several issues of the magazine.

Marketing

Next, we took on the big job of helping the marketing department to produce new copy for several School of Arts and Sciences web pages. The school had recently moved to a brand-new website, but the marketing department needed to make sure every department had updated web copy, all in line with the school’s new messaging and also in line with the overall goals of the website. Some departments had traditionally used the outward-facing website as a tool to communicate with current students, and others hadn’t updated copy in many years. One department at a time, we went out to work directly with faculty in the School of Arts and Sciences to develop new sitemaps, conduct interviews, and produce copy to match the new site and its messaging standards.

Office of the President

Finally, we were asked to join in on a project with the Office of the President, the esteemed Dr. Robert Manuel. As part of his new administration at the school, Dr. Manuel had led the charge in a project he called Vision 2030, which aimed to paint a picture of what UIndy would look like when students born in 2012 arrived for their first day on campus. Dr. Manuel and his office spent an entire year discussing the community’s visions for the future, incorporating feedback from current students, faculty, staff, alumni, and citizens of the local Southside Indianapolis neighborhood. At the end of this period, we worked closely with Dr. Manuel to produce two reports: the first, a public-facing document detailing the results of the project and the school’s operating vision for the near future; and the second, an internal document discussing financial goals and new growth targets with the school’s board of trustees.

For Ryan especially, it has been a thrill to tell these stories and watch UIndy grow and take on the mantle of developing the Southside, as well as its own community of students.
